If you live in the Greater Manchester area in the north of England you will probably be aware of the Mayor’s Spatial Framework plan which will involve building on thousands of acres of Greenbelt land, causing an untold amount of destruction to the environment and habitats. If this thing goes ahead it will have a devastating impact on the wildlife.
I have belonged a campaign group for over a year now and we have built up a very strong appeal. Recent population projections are lower than the ones that informed the evidence base for the plan, mostly due to Brexit and the end of free movement. The upshot is that all the extra houses are superfluous to requirements, and even the mayor concedes that building on the Greenbelt would not be necessary if we use the latest figures.
The problem though is that we are almost certainly going to have to take legal action to stop this going ahead, which will cost tens of thousands. Our planner has advised us to aim for 100k. Raising that kind of money will not be easy. Has anyone ever been involved in something like this? If so, I would be interested in hearing how you went about fund-raising. We’ve got a few months before this thing comes back (and the council won’t be voting on it until the autumn at the earliest) but we want to be ready!
