To get the ball rolling on the new site I was wondering if anybody else watched (vegan) George Monbiot’s documentary, Apocalypse Cow, earlier this month? If you live in the UK you can watch it on Channel 4’s catch-up service:
Anyway, he made the point that most of the world’s vegetables and grain is grown on land using cow manure as a fertilizer, so even most vegan food is an indirect byproduct of the meat industry.
The manure is also causing massive environmental problems because once the ground becomes saturated it cannot absorb it any more and then rain carries it into rivers and streams where it is having a catastrophic impact on biodiversity, with some waterways effectively becoming “dead zones”.
I would definitely recommend the programme, I learned so much.
